Out in the Cold

“Cold Feet”--an offbeat, contemporary Western starring Sally Kirkland, Keith Carradine and Tom Waits--opened Friday with Robert Dornhelm listed as director. But Dornhelm tells us he tried to take his name off the credits after seeing the final version--and that Avenue Pictures chairman Cary Brokaw, the film’s exec producer, refused to remove it.

Dornhelm said Brokaw took control of the film, bringing in editor David Rowlins (whose credits include “Police Academy IV”) to do the final cut.

European-educated, Dornhelm is a former documentary film maker (the Oscar-nominated “Children of Theater Street”) who debuted in features with “Echo Park.” “Cold Feet” is his second feature.

“I’m in a no-win situation,” Dornhelm said. “Not only did I lose the picture, but I’m going to be held responsible for people not liking it.”

We tried to reach both Brokaw and Rowlins but were told they were out of town and unavailable for comment.
