From Times staff and wire service reports

Michael Douglas Taylor, who allegedly led four other inmates in an escape from Orange County Jail last November, appeared in federal court today after his arrest here Saturday and said he “objected” to the charges against him.

Taylor, suspected of robbing dozens of jewelry stores in several states, is being held without bond on charges that he fled California to avoid prosecution after the jailbreak. Dressed in dark green jail clothes, Taylor was led into court under heavy security. After listening to the charges against him, he waved a copy of the complaint and said, “I object to the statements in this.”

U.S. District Judge Andrew Bogue asked that Taylor be given an attorney and scheduled a detention hearing for Thursday.
