Davis Named New Canoga Park Coach

Jeff Davis, a longtime assistant at El Camino Real High, Monday was named the new varsity basketball coach at Canoga Park, succeeding Joey Nakasone, who resigned in April after eight seasons.

Davis coached the junior varsity at El Camino Real for the past seven seasons and compiled a record of 42-10 over the last three years. He welcomes the formidable task of rebuilding the Hunters, who finished last in the West Valley League in 1988-89.

“I think the kids will like playing for me,” said Davis, 29, a 1978 graduate of El Camino Real. “I like the running, trapping, pressing style of play. I know Canoga has the athletes to have a winning basketball team--I just have to find and get them out there.”

Davis will continue to teach at El Camino Real as an English, social studies and journalism teacher until a teaching position opens up at Canoga Park. Nakasone, 38, will remain at Canoga Park as a biology teacher and boys’ volleyball coach.

“He was recommended by practically every coach in the Valley,” Canoga Park Athletic Director Marty Denyer said of Davis. “We feel he’s a good coach who will rebuild our program.”
