SDSU’s Bradley Named Assistant Basketball Coach at Brigham Young

Charles Bradley, assistant basketball coach at San Diego State, has been named assistant to Roger Reid, the new coach at Brigham Young.

“He’ll be a great addition to our program,” said Reid, “and he understands what it takes.”

Said Aztec Coach Jim Brandenburg, who brought Bradley with him from the University of Wyoming when he came to SDSU: “Charles has been a great player and an excellent coach in all the years we have been together. He’s done an outstanding job for me at San Diego State as well as at Wyoming. He has a very bright future in the coaching profession, and I wish him the best.”

Bradley averaged 17 points per game and shot 53% from the floor as a four-year starter for Wyoming. Following his graduation in 1981, Bradley was a first-round draft pick by the Boston Celtics and later joined the Seattle SuperSonics.

In 1984 he launched his coaching career as freshman coach at Mullen High in Inglewood, Colo. He also spent a season as a player with the Wyoming Wildcatters of the Continental Basketball Assn.

Bradley joined Brandenburg’s staff at Wyoming in 1986. The Cowboys won the Western Athletic Conference tournament in 1986 and advanced in the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. playoffs with victories over Virginia and UCLA. The Cowboys were 24-10 that season.

BASBALL

Mt. Carmel pitcher Byron Klemaske has accepted a full scholarship to Nevada-Reno. Klemaske (13-1) was the sixth-leading strikeout pitcher in the county (76) and will start Thursday in top-ranked Mt. Carmel’s opening 3-A playoff game against Patrick Henry.

ADMINISTRATION

Scott Barnes has been named associate director of development for athletics at the University of San Diego, Tom Iannocone, director of athletics, announced Tuesday. Barnes will assume the new position July 1. He will be responsible for marketing, advertising and promotions for USD athletics. He will plan, manage and direct the annual fund-raising activities for USD’s athletic programs.

This past year, Barnes, 26, was the general manager of the Fresno Flames of the World Basketball League.

FOOTBALL

The San Diego Chargers signed free-agent punter Lewis Colbert. Colbert, eighth-round draft pick of Kansas City in 1986, played 16 games that season. His 40.7 average on 99 punts ranked seventh in the American Football Conference. Colbert played two games in 1987 before being placed on injured reverse with a back injury. He was released during the Chiefs’ 1988 training camp, re-signed by Atlanta and released during final roster cuts.
