Janet Evans and Tony Pena Are Named Top Athletes

Swimmer Janet Evans of El Dorado High School and pitcher Tony Pena of Mater Dei were named the county’s top athletes by the Orange County Athletic Directors’ Assn. Wednesday night at the Anaheim Stadium Club.

Evans won three gold medals in the Seoul Olympics, winning the 400- and 800-meter freestyle events and the 400-meter individual medley.

She finished her high school career by winning the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events in the Southern Section 3-A championships. She holds national records in both events.

Evans will attend Stanford in the fall.

Pena has compiled a 22-2 record in two seasons at Mater Dei. He was also the county’s second leading receiver last season, catching 64 passes for 1,093 yards and eight touchdowns in 10 games. Pena will attend Arizona State on a baseball scholarship.

Evans and Pena were chosen by a panel of sportswriters from among a list of the top athletes from each league in the county. Each received a $500 scholarship sponsored by Coca-Cola.
