Bob Buczkowski, a former first-round draft pick by the Raiders, signed with the Chargers. Buczkowski, a defensive end from Pitt, was the 24th player chosen overall in the 1986 draft but has suffered from injuries since then.

Buczkowski, 6-feet-5, 265 pounds, missed the 1986 season with a bad back. Hepatitis and various other injuries limited his 1987 season to two games. The Raiders cut him before the beginning of the 1988 season.

Buczkowski’s career totals at Pitt were 133 tackles and 10 sacks in 31 games. He was Pitt’s defensive player of the year his senior year.

MEN’S TENNIS

USD’s Jose Luis Noriega, a freshman from Lima, Peru, advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAA individual tennis championships in Athens, Ga., by defeating 19th-ranked Pat Crow of Cal State Long Beach, 6-4, 6-2.

TRACK AND FIELD

Today’s San Diego-Imperial Athletics Congress open track and field championships have been moved to Southwestern College because of a scheduling conflict at Balboa Stadium. The meet will begin at 3 p.m. if there are at least six runners to contest the 10,000 meters. The bulk of the meet is scheduled to begin at 4, following a standard dual meet schedule. Registration is at the race site from 2-6 p.m. To get to Southwestern College, take 805 south to H Street and H Street east to Otay Lakes Road.

Tommy Anderberf, a Point Loma Nazarene sophomore who missed the past two seasons with injuries, won the javelin with a throw of 216-feet-6 on the first day of the 38th annual NAIA track and field championships at Azusa Pacific.

Point Loma Nazarene is tied for second at 15 points with Adams State and Pittsburgh State (Kansas).

For the women, Connie Navarro is fifth in the heptathlon with 2,703 points through four events.

Three members of the UC San Diego women’s team qualified for Saturday’s finals at the Division III national meet at North Central College in Naperville, Ill. In discus, Shannon Quigley (145-feet-1) qualified second and Rachel Beerman (131-2) 12th. In 100 meters, Andrea Kouremetis qualified fourth in 12.26 seconds.

MEN’S GOLF

U.S. International’s Paul McGinley shot a first-round 75, placing him in a six-way tie for 57th place in the NCAA qualifying tournament at Texas El Paso. San Diego State’s Tim Todd shot a 76 (tied for 63rd). Chris Gonzales (USC) leads with a six-under 66.

UCSD moved from 11th to eighth place in the NCAA Division III national tournament at Penora, Iowa.

The Tritons, who will compete today in the final round, were led by Devin Thomas (70). His three-day total is 221, placing him in a three-way tie for second among 120 golfers.

UCSD’s Gary Bong shot 74 and is 17th with a 229.

WOMEN’S GOLF

U.S. International’s Allison Shapcott is tied for ninth after the second day of the NCAA women’s championships at Stanford. Shapcott shot 74 for a two-day total of 150.

UCLA’s Christy Erb, a 1986 graduate of USDHS, is 48th with a total of 156.
