Golf Roundup : Byrum Has 2-Shot Lead After a 65

Tom Byrum, seeking his first victory in four years on the PGA Tour, shot a six-under-par 65 Saturday to take a two-stroke lead over Tommy Armour III in the third round of the Kemper Open at Potomac, Md.

Byrum, who had missed the cut in nine of his 16 previous tournaments this year, took the lead with a birdie on No. 12. He parred the next five holes before sinking a 37-foot birdie putt on No. 18 for a total of 200. He had seven birdies and a bogey.

Armour, also winless in his three years on the tour, matched the course record with a 64 for a 202 total after three trips over the 6,917-yard TPC at Avenel course. Armour gained momentum with three straight birdies, beginning on No. 5, and ended up with nine birdies.

Jeff Hart, Don Pooley and Mark McCumber were next at 204. Hart shot a 65, McCumber a 66; Pooley, who started the day in second place, had four bogeys and four birdies in a round of 71.

Patty Sheehan had a double-eagle on the par-five, 459-yard 17th hole, highlighting a six-under-par round of 66 that moved her into the lead after 54 holes in the Rochester International at Pittsford, N.Y.

Sheehan’s three-wood second shot on No. 17 traveled 219 yards, bounced just in front of the green and rolled into the hole for the first double-eagle on the women’s tour since Chris Johnson did it in March 1987 at the Tuscon Open.

Sheehan had a total of 207, one stroke ahead of Sherri Turner, who shot a 69.

Ayako Okamoto was third at 210 after a 69.

Al Geiberger rolled in a 12-foot birdie put on the 18th hole to tie Gary Player for the lead after two rounds of the $300,000 Doug Sanders senior tournament at Houston.

Geiberger shot a bogey-free, three-under-par 69, while Player, the first-round leader, had a 70, including birdies on the 16th and 17th holes. They were tied at 137.
