Dobson, Schumacher Win Titles in Surfing
Dale Dobson won the men’s title and Jeanette Schumacher won the women’s title in the Huntington Beach Longboard ProAm surfing tournament Saturday.
Dobson, who is from Oceanside, collected $1,000. Schumacher, also from Oceanside, won $200 in the winner-take-all women’s event. Albert Jenks of Lahaina, Maui, won $500 for second place and Adam Paskowitz of Malibu won $400 for third in the men’s division.
Herbie Fletcher of San Clemente was fourth and won $300, Joey Hawkins of Huntington Beach was fifth ($200) and Bill Stewart of San Clemente finished sixth ($100).
The surfers competed under good conditions as the waves ranged from three feet to five feet.
The men’s event was close among the top three finishers but the 42-year-old Dobson’s experience proved to be the deciding factor.
“His wave selection was excellent,” said Frank Cochran, one of the tournament organizers. “He is the most consistent winner on the longboard circuit, and that proved to be the difference.”
The event was part of the Orange County Centennial and proceeds went to the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum.
