One of Two Fires Contained in New Mexico
From United Press International
CARLSBAD, N. M. — A brush fire sparked by lightning in a remote area of Carlsbad Caverns National Park was contained Sunday, and firefighters were closing in on a second, larger blaze burning nearby.
Neither of the fires threatened the caverns, park buildings or campsites, officials said.
The larger blaze, called the Bear fire, had burned off 600 acres of arid land about 25 miles southwest of here, in the southeastern part of the state, since a lightning strike started it Friday.
