Bailey, Patton Sign Major League Contracts

Rob Bailey of Fullerton College and Eric Patton of Saddleback College signed with major league teams Monday.

Bailey, who played shortstop and center field for Fullerton, was taken in the second round by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Bailey, who hit a team-high .386 and also led the team in steals with 31, runs batted in (24), triples (7) and runs scored (31), will report to a minicamp in Florida for five days.

Bailey, who passed on a scholarship to the University of Texas, will be assigned to a Rookie League or Class-A team.

Patton, a sophomore right-handed pitcher with Saddleback, signed with the Brewers. He will report to the Brewers’ Rookie League team in Helena, Mont. Patton was 5-6 this season with 88 strikeouts in 90 innings this season.

Eddie Pierce, Marty Cordova and Brian McLeod of Orange Coast all were taken in last week’s amateur draft, but have not signed.

Pierce, an outfielder and left-handed pitcher, was taken by the Dodgers. Cordova, a third baseman, was taken by the Minnesota Twins, and McLeod, a right-handed pitcher, was taken by the San Francisco Giants.

Cal State Fullerton’s Rex Peters was drafted by the Dodgers. Peters, a senior first baseman, played two seasons at Orange Coast.
