Tennis Roundup : Edberg Upset at Queen’s Club
Defending Wimbledon champion Stefan Edberg of Sweden was upset Tuesday in the first round of the Queen’s Club tennis tournament at London by Venezuelan Nicolas Pereira, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4).
“You can’t expect to play great tennis on grass with 1 1/2 hours practice,” Edberg said.
Top-seeded Ivan Lendl defeated Sweden’s Tobias Svantesson, 1-6, 6-2, 6-1, and third-seeded Mats Wilander of Sweden defeated Richard Matuszewski, 6-2, 6-2.
Martina Navratilova beat Japan’s Akiko Kijimuta, 6-0, 6-1, in the second round of a Virginia Slims tournament at Edgbaston, England.
Pam Shriver overcame Laura Golarsa of Italy, 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4.
Second-seeded Zina Garrison defeated Hu Na of San Diego, 6-3, 6-4, and Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany defeated Nana Miyaki of Japan, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
