Residents Object to Hospital’s Plan for Parking Structure

Share

The Garfield Medical Center is proposing to build a multilevel parking structure that will directly face the 600 block of Baltimore Avenue in Monterey Park. The hospital has requested a conditional-use permit and a variance to build the structure but has made no legal justification for requesting them.

The hospital claims it needs the garage in order to continue serving us well. Yet it is not acting as such a good neighbor. The hospital has not once stopped to consider the adverse effects that the parking structure will have on our nice neighborhood.

The law states that the permit and variance need not be granted if the proposed project will have an adverse effect on the interests of the public or nearby residents and property owners. The increase of an additional 331 cars will eventually cause many adverse effects, such as traffic hazards and congestion, air toxicity, noise (such as echoing car alarms). There’s also the possibility that transients or others may use this concrete monster to conduct crimes such as drug dealing.

But there is hope if we all get together and object to the structure being built at that site.ERIK GRISE
