A teen-age escapee from a juvenile camp in Campo was arrested early Wednesday morning after leading San Diego police on a high-speed chase, authorities said.

Police said the youth, 15, was booked into Juvenile Hall on suspicion of auto theft, reckless driving, evading a police officer, driving without a license, hit-and-run and providing false information.

He also had an outstanding warrant from Rancho del Rayo, a juvenile camp. The boy had escaped from the minimum-security camp on March 31, where he was being held on burglary charges, a Juvenile Hall spokesman said.

At 2:25 a.m. Wednesday, police officers tried to stop the youth’s car at Olvera and Euclid avenues after he ran a red light. The youth fled toward Interstate 15, crashing into several parked cars on Ash Street and injuring at least two of the passengers riding with him, police spokesman Dave Cohen said.

The boy then ran across the interstate and hid in some deep brush. Police officers warned him twice that a dog would be sent in to retrieve him unless he came out voluntarily, Cohen said. When the boy failed to come out, the dog was released into the brush, where he bit the boy several times.

The youth was treated at UC San Diego Medical Center before being booked at Juvenile Hall. A detention hearing will be held by Friday, authorities said.

Two female passengers, both juveniles, were injured in the collision, Cohen said. One suffered a sprained ankle and was treated and released from Sharp Hospital. The other suffered a minor head injury and abdominal pain and was treated at Children’s Hospital.

Neither was held or charged, Cohen said.

A male passenger in the youth’s car escaped from the scene. Police believe he is a juvenile and do not know if he was injured in the crash, Cohen said.
