SOUTHLAND : L.A. Sheriff’s Deputy Arrested for 1986 Robbery of Miami Lawyer
A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was arrested today on a Florida warrant charging him and another man with robbing a prominent Miami attorney at gunpoint in 1986.
Detectives arrested George Markel, 38, an 11-year veteran of the department, at his home in Rowland Heights at 7:30 a.m.
The Florida warrant charges that he and William Mentzer robbed Miami attorney Frank Rubino of his Rolex watch and his Ferrari in July, 1986. Rubino told detectives that the armed robbery occurred after a business meeting he had with Larry and Karen DeLayne Jacobs Greenberger, also known as Lanie Jacobs. The attorney alleged that prior to the meeting, the Greenbergers used Mentzer and Markel to intimidate him into signing over half a partnership in a sport fishing boat business, Jones said.
