A strong earthquake rumbled through south-central Alaska today, tossing dishes from shelves and pictures off walls but causing no reported injuries, a seismologist said.

The 5.9 quake was centered 50 miles west of Kodiak, 280 miles southwest of Anchorage, and was felt strongly in the Kodiak Island cities of Kodiak, Lawson Bay and Old Harbor, said George Carte of the Alaska Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer outside of Anchorage. He said minor damage was reported, but there was no major structural damage. He said there was no danger of a tsunami, or tidal wave.
