THE SIDELINES : Flyers’ Kerr Gets Masterton Trophy
Tim Kerr, the Philadelphia Flyers’ power-play specialist whose shoulder problems limited him to eight games in 1987-88 and who came back to score 48 goals in 1988-89, today was presented with the NHL’s Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.
The award is presented annually by the Professional Hockey Writers Assn. for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.
The trophy is named after Bill Masterton, the former Minnesota North Star who on Jan. 15, 1968, became the only NHL player ever to die as the result of an on-ice injury.
The league also announced today that Lanny McDonald of the Calgary Flames has been named the NHL Man of the Year, an honor given to the player best recognized in the local community as a positive role model through his conduct on and off the ice.
