Ivan Lendl, given his first stiff test on grass as he builds for Wimbledon, reached the semifinals of the $380,000 Queens Club grass-court tennis championships in London today with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Michael Stich of West Germany.
But Mats Wilander, another of the world’s leading players bidding for a first Wimbledon title, continued his poor season by losing to Paul Annacone of Bridgehampton, N.Y., 6-2, 6-4.
Martina Navratilova eased into the semifinals of a $150,000 Virginia Slims event today with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Australian qualifier Kristine Radford at Edgbaston, England.
Standing between Navratilova and her third final of the year is Elna Reinach of South Africa, who defeated American Betsy Nagelsen 1-6, 6-3, 7-5.
In the other semifinal, second-seeded Zina Garrison will meet defending champion Claudia Kohde-Kilsch. Both enjoyed quarterfinal victories, with Garrison overcoming Japanese qualifier Kimiko Date 6-3, 6-2 and the fifth-seeded Kohde-Kilsch defeating Ann Henricksson 6-2, 6-4.
John McEnroe eased the pain of a 2-year-old defeat today when he breezed into the semifinals of a pre-Wimbledon grass-court tournament, overwhelming Argentina’s Horacio de La Pena 6-3, 6-3 at Edinburgh, Scotland.
McEnroe lost to the Argentine in the first round of the French Open in 1987.
In women’s semifinal action, top-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez defeated Ann Grossman 6-1, 6-1 and will play defending champion and No. 2 Gigi Fernandez, who beat unranked Suzie Mair of Scotland 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
Morocco beat Kenya today in singles competition in the first day of the Davis Cup Africa Zone Group 2 semifinals in Nairobi, Kenya.
Morocco’s Chekrouni Arafa, seeded No. 2, rallied from a two-set deficit to beat Kenya’s top player, Eno Polo, 5-7, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
Outaleb Khalid, Morocco’s top player, had no trouble dispatching Norbert Odour 6-0, 6-0, 6-3.
Greece defeated Monaco in doubles today in Athens to take a 2-1 lead in the Davis Cup European Zone B competition.
Giorgos Kalovelonis and Constantinos Efremoglou, attacking at every opportunity, beat Christophe Boggetti and Jacques Vincilloni of Monaco 6-3, 6-4, 7-5.
