A Canadian independent television station has bowed to public pressure and canceled the controversial American syndicated horror show “Freddy’s Nightmares,” based on the four successful “Nightmare on Elm Street” films. Ernest Robinson, the Ontario teacher who organized the three-month campaign against the show because it features torture and mutilation, especially of women, said he is working on a similar campaign in the United States. “This is just disgusting material,” said Robinson, who began organizing against the show after seeing an episode three months ago. He gathered signatures from thousands of people opposed to the show and garnered support from Catholic groups, the mayor and city council and various area school boards and teachers’ organizations. A spokeswoman for the station said the show was dropped because “it’s the responsible thing to do if we’re offending people.”
