Terry Holland, the winningest basketball coach in Virginia history, was named athletic director at Davidson College, his alma mater. He will begin at Davidson on May 1, 1990, after coaching Virginia again in the 1989-90 season.

Holland, 47, said he would lose money with his new one-year contract because of the loss of shoe, television and radio deals.

Holland, who played at Davidson in 1962-1964 and coached there from 1969-1974, indicated he had no interest in the dual role of coach and athletic director at Davidson.

In 15 seasons at Virginia, Holland has compiled a 306-161 record.
