Funeral Rites for Manning Open to Public

The Los Angeles Catholic Archdiocese will hold public funeral services over three days for Cardinal Timothy Manning, the retired archbishop of Los Angeles who died Friday.

All services will be held at St. Vibiana’s Cathedral at 2nd and Main streets downtown. The cathedral is where Manning lived during his 15 years as archbishop.

Manning’s body will lie in state Tuesday evening and most of Wednesday.

St. Vibiana will open at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday. Formal liturgical reception of Manning’s body will begin at 7:30, followed by Solemn Vespers. The cathedral will close at 10.

On Wednesday, doors will reopen at 8 a.m. Archbishop Roger Mahony will be the principal celebrant of a Mass at 11. The cathedral will be closed from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

A rosary and vigil service will begin at 7:30. The cathedral will close at 10 p.m.

On Thursday, it will open at 10 a.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11. Most of the active American cardinals, more than 100 bishops and civic leaders are expected to attend.

Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery in East Los Angeles. The burial will be open to the public.
