The Class A yachts in the Los Angeles-to-Honolulu race had a new leader Friday as the big ultra-light displacement “sleds” jockeyed for the best position to make the run down the Molokai Channel to the finish off Oahu’s Diamond Head.
Out in front was Silver Bullet, a Santa Cruz-70 skippered by John DeLaura of Sunset Beach. Silver Bullet logged a 275-mile run to put her 418 miles from the finish, five miles ahead of Paul Simonsen’s Mongoose, out of San Francisco.
In the attempt at a new elapsed-time record in the 2,225-mile race, Silver Bullet had 39 hours left in which to cover the 418 miles and better the mark of 8 days 11 hours. Mongoose was 423 miles from the finish, Taxi Dancer 431.
The Class A fleet was reporting northeast winds of 20 knots, ahead of six- to eight-foot seas.
