Making school athletes run laps, do push-ups or undergo other physical punishment for misbehavior is probably just as illegal as corporal punishment, California’s Department of Education has advised.

Department officials say a 1987 law that bans corporal punishment also applies to forced exercise, commonly used by coaches, as well as hitting, paddling and other physical actions against students.

The state guidelines say coaches can order players to do strenuous exercise--but not as punishment.
