THE SIDELINES : W. Germans Beat U.S. in Water Polo

West Germany edged the United States 7-6 today in third-day action of the FINA World Cup water polo tournament. Italy trimmed Hungary 7-6 in another match of the tournament, which features the world’s eight top-ranked water polo teams.

Dirk Theismann and Hagen Stamm collected two goals each for West Germany, and Julian Harvey had two for the United States.

After shutting out the Americans in the first two periods, West Germany led 4-1 entering the final quarter. The Americans stormed back to tie the game but still fell short despite outscoring the West Germans 5-3 in the last quarter.
