A HAVEN IN THE SOUTHLAND

As a resident of the lovely city of La Verne, I feel I must come to the defense of its reputation. The July 2 Book Review section had a picture of a “skinhead” being apprehended at a grocery store on Foothill Boulevard. He and his friends are not residents of our town, but the publicity given to the arrest could lead readers to assume that this was a local incident.

La Verne is an old community. Churches abound, many people live in the same neighborhood where they grew up, a child’s school teacher may also be his Sunday School teacher. We have a large retirement community, a college that has provided the San Gabriel Valley with many educators, a tour of our older homes at Christmas time. To imply that our little community is a center for such racist hate-mongering people as the skinheads is to do La Verne a disservice.
