Taking “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk upon the moon 20 years ago come Thursday.
That grand achievement is celebrated by television--particularly PBS and the Arts and Entertainment cable network--with special telecasts this week.
On Sunday at 6:20 a.m., A&E; launches a three-part presentation under the overall title “Moonwalk: As It Happened 1969.” Using rebroadcasts of the Apollo 11 lunar coverage by NBC News, A&E; televises the liftoff Sunday morning, with coverage of the moonwalk by Armstrong and fellow astronaut Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin airing from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Thursday. The “Recovery” will be carried July 24.
Sunday also brings “From Apollo to the Stars,” an hourlong report on man’s exploration of space airing from 1 to 2 p.m. on Channel 28.
Then on Wednesday, PBS presents “The Other Side of the Moon,” a 90-minute documentary in which eight of the Apollo astronauts talk about their experiences. It airs at 8 p.m. on Channels 15 and 24 and at 9 p.m. on Channel 28.
