Austin, New Jersey to Face Strings

The Los Angeles Strings make their 1989 home debut at 7:30 tonight in the Forum against the New Jersey Stars in a TeamTennis match.

Two-time U.S. Open champion Tracy Austin, who hasn’t played in Southern California for four months, leads the Stars.

Austin, 26, of Rolling Hills, played in the Virginia Slims of Indian Wells in March, the first time she played tournament singles in five years because of injuries.

Anne Minter and Lise Gregory, John Lloyd and Roger Smith form this year’s Strings, who are 1-2.

Teaming with Austin on the 3-0 Stars, are her brother John, Bill Scanlon and Shaun Stafford, the 1988 National Collegiate Athletic Assn. champion from Florida.
