Bob Probert, who gained prominence as a right winger with the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League despite alcohol and drug problems, pleaded guilty to importing cocaine.

Federal prosecutors noted that the half-ounce of cocaine, which Probert brought into the United States from Canada on March 2, was for his personal use. He is expected to be given a light prison term at his Sept. 26 sentencing. The conviction carries a maximum sentence of 20 years.

Probert led the league with 398 penalty minutes in 1987-88, a Red Wing record.

Days after his arrest, he was banned from the NHL.
