El Monte : Anti-Pollution Talk Set
Penny Newman, leader of a community group that has been working for cleanup of the Stringfellow Acid Pits in Riverside County, will speak Wednesday at a meeting of the San Gabriel Valley Superfund Working/Information Group (SWIG).
SWIG was formed this year to monitor the cleanup of polluted ground water in the San Gabriel Valley.
The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the El Monte Community Center, 3130 Tyler Ave. Newman is co-founder and executive director of a group that has worked on the Stringfellow cleanup project since 1979. She is also western field organizer of the Citizens Clearinghouse for Hazardous Waste, a national environmental organization.
Mary Johnson, one of the organizers of SWIG, said Newman was invited to offer advice on how the group can be most effective in seeking cleanup of polluted ground water. Both the Stringfellow Acid Pits and the San Gabriel Valley ground-water basin are on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s list of toxic sites to be cleaned up with help from the federal Superfund.
