The Message of ‘Do the Right Thing’

“Do the Right Thing” didn’t do the right thing.

Imagine that a white person, instead of black, had produced this movie. People of all colors would have been up in arms, disclaiming the film as a throwback to eras of simple-minded bigotry against black people.

What does “Do the Right Thing” say about black people?

--That they are lazy and irresponsible and that they take long breaks from their jobs in order to have sex, chat, relax.

--That they deal with life through endless bottles of booze.

--That they tote blaring boom boxes, showing no consideration for the sensitivities of others.

--That they hate “outsiders” (whites, Orientals, etc.).

“Do the Right Thing” is a racist’s delight.
