A woman was hit by two cars and critically injured early Sunday as she crossed Coast Highway in South Laguna, and police were seeking the victim’s identity and any witnesses to the accident.

Laguna Beach Police Sgt. Lance Ishmael said the woman referred to by police and hospital officials as Jane Doe appears to be in her early to middle 20s.

She has brown, medium-length hair, is 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs about 145 pounds. She was wearing two toe rings on her left foot and a light blue skirt, dark blue top and yellow thongs.

Ishmael said the woman carried no identification when she was hit at 1:33 a.m. near the West Street junction, where there is a Coast Highway crosswalk but no traffic signal. He provided the following account of the accident:

A Ford Escort driven by a Long Beach man was traveling north on Coast Highway when it struck the woman, knocking her onto the hood, then into the windshield. The woman fell off the car into the roadway, and another driver, who did not see the victim, also struck her.

Both drivers pulled over immediately and tried to get help. Neither driver had been drinking alcohol, police said.

The victim was taken by rescue helicopter to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, where she was reported in very critical condition with “major head injuries and several broken bones,” Ishmael said.
