Tennis Roundup : Agassi Gets $220,000 for Defeating Lendl

Andre Agassi beat Ivan Lendl, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, in the final of the four-man ANA Cup Sunday at Tokyo.

Agassi earned $220,000, the richest winner’s purse ever in a tournament in Japan.

Lendl, the world’s No. 1 player, squandered leads of 4-2 and 6-5 in the first-set tiebreaker and ended up with the second prize of $140,000.

Stefan Edberg defeated fellow Swede Mats Wilander, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), before 14,356 spectators on an artificial surface at Yokohama Arena and won the third prize of $80,000. Wilander received $60,000.

In the Tokyo tiebreaker, Agassi caught up at 6-6 when Lendl netted a backhand. A service winner and a passing shot gave him the first set.

The only service break of the second set came in the seventh game. Lendl double-faulted for 15-40, won the next point with a volley but hit a forehand long.

Rain suspended the championship match of the Sovran Bank tournament with No. 2-seeded Brad Gilbert holding a 6-3, 1-1 lead over top-seeded Tim Mayotte at Washington. The match will be concluded today.

Rain delayed the start of the match 90 minutes before they got in three games. A second shower stopped play for 31 minutes. Another stoppage occurred in the eighth game of the match, and play was finally stopped for good in the third game of the second set with Gilbert serving at 15-15.

Martin Jaite of Argentina beat Goran Prpic of Yugoslavia, 6-3, 6-2, to win a $350,000 Grand Prix tournament at Stuttgart, West Germany.

The 24-year-old Jaite, who also won the tournament in 1986, earned $49,500 for his victory.

The men’s singles final in a Grand Prix tournament at Hilversum, Netherlands, was rained out and will be played today. Emilio Sanchez of Spain faces Paolo Conte of Italy.

Top-seeded Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria defeated qualifer Sabine Hack of West Germany, 6-1, 6-3, to win the $75,000 Volvo Ladies International tournament at Bastad, Sweden.

Laura Gildemeister of Peru rallied from an 0-3 first-set deficit to defeat Marianne Werdel of Palo Alto, Calif., 6-4, 6-3, in the final of the $200,000 OTB International tournament at Schenectady, N.Y.
