In the quickest time of his professional career, Paul Gonzales of Los Angeles needed only 2 minutes 14 seconds to stop Sergio Perez of Calicano, Mexico, in the first round of a scheduled 10-round fight Monday night at Sacramento.

Gonzales, a flyweight gold medalist in the 1984 Olympics, knocked down Perez twice in the first round, the second knockdown ending the bout before a crowd of 761.

Gonzales knocked Perez down with a left hook and said he set them up the same way.

“I took a step to my left, threw a right and then followed with a left hook,” he told the Sacramento Bee. “I’ve been working hard putting my body behind my punches.”

Gonzales, 24, is 12-1 with his last three victories coming by knockout. Perez, 29, is 19-9-1 with 13 KOs.

Hector Lopez scored a technical knockout over Santos Moreno at the end of the sixth round of a scheduled 12-round World Boxing Assn. Intercontinental Lightweight championship at the Forum.

“I felt heavy since this was the highest weight I have ever fought,” Lopez said. “I was testing the grounds as a lightweight. I was satisfied with my performance.”

Genaro Hernandez won a 10-round unanimous decision over Felipe Orozco and Edward Parker, and Rogelio Lopez fought to a draw in Forum super featherweight tournament quarterfinal bouts. Parker advanced to the semifinals based on total points scored in his bout.

Ernie Chavez scored a unanimous, 10-round decision over Daryl Colquitt in a welterweight bout at the Irvine Marriott.

Chavez (6-0), of Westminster, had a tough time getting a clear shot at Colquitt, who ducked away from most every punch Chavez threw. Colquitt, of Los Angeles, is 0-7. Both fighters were making their main-event debuts.

Chavez gained the advantage early but never put together any kind of exchange. Colquitt seemed content to box defensively.

“He could counter-punch OK,” Chavez said. “I was a little gun-shy. All I was worried about was missing him and having him come back strong at me.”
