From Times staff and wire service reports

An inmate escaped from a Los Angeles County jail in Saugus by climbing onto the roof of a maximum-security facility, dropping to the ground and then scaling a 12-foot fence, sheriff’s deputies said this morning. It was the second such escape in eight days.

Kirk Anderson, 27, of Van Nuys was discovered missing from the Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho at 11:40 p.m. Sunday, Deputy Pat Hunter said. Anderson, serving a one-year sentence for carrying a concealed weapon and filing a false financial statement, was last seen during a 7:30 p.m. inmate count, deputies said.

Deputies said it appeared that fellow inmates helped Anderson climb to a wire-mesh screen that covers the facility’s recreation yard. He broke through the covering and onto the roof, then jumped down and climbed a 12-foot fence to freedom, deputies said.

Anderson, who faces a court hearing Aug. 14 on a burglary charge, was wearing light blue pants and a white pullover sweater with L.A. County Jail stenciled on them.

On July 30, inmate Rodolfo Corona, 21, escaped from the same maximum-security facility by climbing to the roof from the recreation yard. Corona, who was awaiting court hearings on robbery and kidnaping charges, has not been captured.

Two other inmates escaped July 20 from the jail’s minimum-security facility but were captured the next day.
