LOCAL : Man Killed Driving Wrong Way on Santa Ana Freeway; Tourist Hurt

A man was killed early today when he drove his car the wrong way down the Santa Ana Freeway and collided with a carload of tourists from Hawaii, injuring one of them seriously, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The man, who remains unidentified pending notification of relatives, was driving northbound in the southbound lanes of the Santa Ana Freeway north of Euclid Street at about 65 m.p.h. when he collided with the other car shortly before midnight, CHP Officer Keith Thornhill said.

The man, from Kirkland, Wash., hit a car carrying four visitors from Honolulu, seriously injuring the driver, Keith Kanai Munson, 25, who remains in serious condition at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, Thornhill said.

Also injured were passengers Darlene Kuhn, 33, Georgette Shiraishi, 36, and Vance Munson, 28, Thornhill said.

The driver of car going the wrong way, about 19 years old, was pronounced dead at UCI Medical Center in Orange, Thornhill said. The car carried Washington license plates.
