David Cone pitched a six-hitter and Darryl Strawberry capped a six-run seventh inning with a three-run homer, carrying the New York Mets to a 9-0 victory over the Phillies at Philadelphia Tuesday night.

Cone (9-5), who won his sixth consecutive decision, struck out five and walked one in pitching his fifth complete game. It was his first shutout since Sept. 10, 1988, when he beat the Montreal Expos, 6-0.

“He went right after them,” Met Manager Davey Johnson said. “He didn’t fool around at all. Also, the ballclub did the things we’re capable of doing.”

The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the second off loser Bruce Ruffin (3-6) on Tim Teufel’s run-scoring double and added two runs in the fifth on Barry Lyons’ third homer of the season and an RBI double by Keith Miller.

Mark Carreon started the Mets’ seventh with a single off reliever Larry McWilliams. Carreon took second on Lyons’ single, and Cone’s bunt was fielded by first baseman Ricky Jordan, who threw too late to third to get Carreon, loading the bases.

Todd Frohwirth relieved McWilliams, but walked pinch-hitter Dave Magadan and hit Juan Samuel. Another run scored on Howard Johnson’s fielder’s choice before Strawberry followed with his 24th homer.

Chicago 4, Montreal 2--Solo home runs by Mark Grace, Ryne Sandberg and Jerome Walton and outstanding pitching by Mike Bielecki and Les Lancaster ended Dennis Martinez’s 11-game winning streak and continued the Expos’ slide in a game at Chicago.

It was the 10th victory in 13 games for the Cubs, who opened a two-game lead in the National League East over the Expos, who lost their sixth in a row.

Bielecki (12-5) posted his fourth consecutive victory, giving up five hits, walking two and striking out four in seven innings. Martinez (12-2) hadn’t lost since April 25. Lancaster, the third Chicago pitcher, got the final two outs to earn his fifth save.

Pittsburgh 7, St. Louis 3--At Pittsburgh, pitcher Bob Walk doubled home the Pirates’ first run and also tripled, as he defeated the Cardinals for the third time without a loss this season.

The Pirates, after scoring only 18 runs in the first eight games of their 10-game home stand, chased St. Louis starter Ken Hill (6-8) with four runs in the fourth inning.

Walk (9-7) gave up seven hits in eight innings and was two for three at the plate, raising his batting average to .240. He took a four-hitter into the eighth, but a three-run homer by Pedro Guerrero spoiled the shutout bid. Bill Landrum pitched the ninth.

Houston 12, San Diego 3--Glenn Davis hit two home runs and drove home five runs as the Astros overpowered the Padres at San Diego.

Ken Caminiti hit a three-run homer and Craig Biggio added a two-run shot as the Astros hit four homers in a game for the second time in 10 days.

Jim Clancy (6-9) pitched a seven-hitter for his first victory since June 16.

The Astros said Mike Scott, winningest pitcher in the major leagues, is doubtful for Thursday’s scheduled start after reinjuring his left hamstring warming up in the bullpen,
