The U.S. ambassador to Iceland and his wife were robbed at gunpoint Wednesday in their Waldorf-Astoria hotel suite of more than $35,000 in jewelry, police said.

Ambassador Nicholas Ruwe, 55, and his wife, Nancy, were not injured, police spokesman Joseph Gallagher said.

The robber, dressed in a light gray suit, told the couple he was a hotel security guard when they opened the door to their suite, Gallagher said. Once the door was open, the bandit showed a handgun, forced the couple into the bedroom and ordered them to sit on the floor and cover themselves with a blanket while he looted the room.
