May Department Stores Co.: The St. Louis-based firm, one of the nation’s largest retailers, reported a second-quarter profit of $78 million, up 24% over a year ago. Sales totaled $2.04 billion, up 8%. The firm said results include $7 million in income from discontinued operations from its Caldor and Venture discount segment.
