SportScope : Bodybuilders to Vie in National Physique Test

The National Physique Committee Tournament of Champions will be held Saturday at Redondo High School. Prejudging begins at 11 a.m. and the finals at 6:30 p.m. Among local entrants, bodybuilder Shane McColgan of Hermosa Beach will team with Cheryl Sandy of Los Angeles to defend the mixed pairs posing title. Malibu’s Surfrider Beach on Aug. 16-20 is the seventh stop for the Professional Surfing Assn. of America’s tour. The event features 192 surfers and 40 body-boarders. Several South Bay surfers are participating, including Ty Cukr and David Downing (Redondo Beach), Scott Daley and Kelly Gibson (Hermosa Beach), Kaipo Guerrero, Todd Jacobs, Steve Howe and Chris Wells (Manhattan Beach) and Jeff Novak (Torrance). Local participants in the bodyboard category include Chris Granone and Kalani Kahalioumi (Lomita).

Master Kwon Sun Choi has returned to San Pedro after guiding the North Taekwondo team to third place in the U.S. Olympic Festival. Choi, formerly of Korea, has instructed in the United States for a decade.

Coach and author Johnny Johnson has announced that another wave of foreign football teams will invade Cal State Dominguez Hills this fall. The teams, which play by American football rules, will stop in Southern California en route to contests in other parts of the world. The Kookaburra team from Australia will practice at Dominguez Hills the first week in October. In conjunction with the visit, Kermit Alexander, formerly of the San Francisco 49ers, will conduct an American rules football clinic for flag football players Oct. 5. The British Bulldogs will arrive in November and a team from Sweden stops off in December. Johnson has authored several books on American-style football for foreigners and has been instrumental in introducing the game worldwide.

Dave Demarest, Former Palos Verdes High School and Cal State Long Beach baseball player and now the baseball coach at La Quinta High School in Westminster, is one of the coaches of the Orange County Cardinals who are playing this week in the Connie Mack World Series at Farmington, N.M.
