A 26-year-old man was killed late Thursday when the car he was driving left Lilac Road in Valley Center and ran into a hill, a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman said.

Miguel Mejia Ordonez of the 30100 block of Cool Valley Road in Valley Center died about 7 p.m. in the accident. A passenger in the car, Rosario Aguilar, 46, of Valley Center was taken by Life Flight to Palomar Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

Neither man was wearing a seat belt, the CHP spokeswoman said.

Ordonez, who the spokesman said was intoxicated and driving at an “extreme” speed, was turning east from Sierra Rojo Road onto Lilac Road when he veered into the opposite lane, the spokeswoman said.

Ordonez swerved to the right to avoid an oncoming car and ran into a hillside, she said.
