Orange County sheriff’s investigators are looking for a Stanton man who allegedly shot his 64-year-old mother in their apartment Friday night and then fled, possibly taking his 3-year-old son with him.

Lt. Larry Abbott said the man’s son, whom neighbors had seen earlier at the apartment, could not be found after the shooting.

Abbott said the shooting occurred at 7:40 p.m. in an apartment at 10670 Bell St. in Stanton. The woman was shot at least once in the lower back and underwent surgery at UCI Medical Center. No report on her condition was available.

It was not immediately known what led to the shooting.

Abbott would not identify the suspect, other than to say he was a 42-year-old man who may be a state parole officer on leave from his job. The man is estranged or divorced from his wife, who lives in North Hollywood, and has been staying with his mother in the Stanton apartment, police said.

Fearing that the man headed for his wife’s residence after the shooting, sheriff’s investigators notified Los Angeles authorities, who determined that the woman is on vacation. However, Abbott said, it is not known whether the suspect is aware that she is gone.

Abbott said investigators believe that the suspect has at least one gun with him.

Deputies have issued a bulletin to all Southern California law enforcement agencies to look for a maroon or red 1988 Hyundai with the license plate 2KVK548.
