Giamatti Barred From Holding Rose Hearing

Baseball’s attempts to conduct a disciplinary hearing on Pete Rose’s alleged gambling activities were put on hold indefinitely Friday when a federal judge in Columbus, Ohio, stayed all proceedings until an appellate court decides whether it will hear an appeal by Rose.

U.S. District Judge John D. Holschuh barred Commissioner Bart Giamatti from holding his hearing, which was scheduled for Thursday.

Holschuh said that nothing should happen until the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decides whether to hear Rose’s appeal that the case belongs in state court in Cincinnati, rather than in federal court.

Meanwhile, in Cincinnai, Thomas P. Gioiosa, a former handyman for Rose who is involved in the betting charges against Rose but who also is awaiting trial on federal cocaine distribution and tax charges, was ordered to undergo two mental examinations next week.
