Moroccan Said Aouita came close to breaking his own world record in the men’s 1,500 meters, winning in 3 minutes 30.63 seconds in the Adriaan Paulen Memorial international track meet at Hengelo, Netherlands.

An American 800-meter relay team of Leroy Burell, Floyd Heard, Carl Lewis and Joe DeLoach came within a hair’s breadth of the 11-year-old world record, winning their event in 1:20.43. The world record of 1:20.26 was set in 1978 by a USC foursome.

The Santa Monica Track Club team might have broken the record, but Heard fumbled the baton.

Soviet pole vaulter Sergei Bubka disappointed the crowd by failing to clear 18 feet 4 1/2 inches, and American Tim Bright won the event at that height.
