Defending champion Arsenal was upset by Manchester United, 4-1, as the English League soccer season began with spectator safety given top priority after last April’s Hillsborough stadium disaster, in which 95 people died.
Stadiums throughout the country reduced their capacities, and several games began late to allow fans to take their seats.
