Two cars collided head-on Wednesday on twisting, two-lane Ortega Highway about nine miles east of San Juan Capistrano, seriously injuring one of the drivers.
The California Highway Patrol said that the driver, John A. Davis, 32, of Lake Elsinore, was traveling east about 40 m.p.h. just before 5 p.m. when he pulled into the oncoming lane for unknown reasons and collided with a car traveling west.
Officers said Davis suffered major injuries and was rushed by helicopter to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, where he underwent surgery.
The other driver, who was not identified, suffered a minor injury, officers said.
