P.M. BRIEFING : Indians Injured at Bhopal Get $60
The Supreme Court today granted $60 each to 7,687 permanently injured victims of the 1984 Bhopal gas leak while other victims protested outside the court demanding the annulment of a $470-million settlement India reached with Union Carbide Corp.
Several petitions are pending in India’s highest court of appeal over the world’s worst industrial disaster, which left more than 3,300 people dead and 200,000 others injured in a leak of toxic methyl isocyanate gas from the U.S. multinational’s pesticide plant.
A three-member Supreme Court panel ordered the central Madhya Pradesh government to pay immediate relief funds to the 7,687 victims who are listed as having permanent injuries from the Dec. 3, 1984, disaster.
