Sweeney May Leave Football

Kevin Sweeney, for a short time the most prolific passer in major college football history, says he may leave the sport now that he has been cut by the San Francisco 49ers.

“I’ll probably go to work; I’m going to talk to some friends in the business community,” said Sweeney, who obtained a bachelor’s degree in finance while passing for Cal State Fresno in the mid-1980s.

During a four-year college career that ended in 1986, Sweeney threw for 10,623 yards, then a record for major college quarterbacks. His career mark was broken a year later by another San Joaquin Valley product, Todd Santos of Selma, who finished his career at San Diego State with 11,425 yards.

Sweeney, a free agent from the Dallas Cowboys, was waived by the 49ers Saturday to make room on the roster for safety Jeff Fuller’s return from a salary holdout.
