Aztecs Get Washington, but Not in Finals

Colorado rallied from a two-game deficit to upset No. 14 San Diego State, 8-15, 14-16, 15-7, 15-4, 15-8 in the ASICS Grand Prix women’s volleyball tournament at SDSU Friday night.

The tournament final was expected to feature San Diego State (2-1) against No. 9 Washington (1-1). The two teams will meet but will instead play for third place tonight at 5 p.m. in Peterson Gym.

The final will match two unranked teams when Colorado plays UC Santa Barbara at 7:30. UCSB upset Washington, 7-15, 15-7, 15-9, 15-12, in pool play Friday.

Shannon Mathew had 25 kills and Amy Erben added 19 for the Aztecs. Tina Murray led Colorado with 23 kills.

U.S. International (0-2) plays Western Kentucky at 3 p.m. in the fifth-place match.

Diana Klintworth had 12 kills to lead UC San Diego, ranked No. 1 in Division III, over Portland State, the No. 1 ranked team in Division II, 15-9, 5-15, 15-10, in pool play of the Fresno Pacific Invitational.

UC San Diego (4-0), the three-time defending Division III champion, reached today’s semifinals by winning four pool matches. The Tritons also defeated Cal State Chico, Seattle Pacific and Southern Oregon. Portland State is the defending Division II national champion.

Klintworth had 30 kills in three matches, and Allison Hensleit had 23 in four matches for UCSD.

In its own tournament, the University of San Diego lost both its matches, to Missouri, 7-15, 19-17, 15-10, 15-9, and to Mississippi, 15-12, 15-9, 15-10.

Utah State won both its matches to lead the the round-robin tournament, which concludes today.

Angela Rock had 19 kills to lead the U.S. women’s team to a 15-2, 15-6, 16-17, 15-4 victory over Canada at Carlsbad High School.

“Rock played the best she’s played since March,” U.S. Coach Terry Liskevych said.

The victory gives the United States a 2-1 lead in the four-match series. The final match is tonight at 7:30 at Grossmont College.
