An unidentified man was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport early Saturday after he allegedly told police he was planning to kill President Bush and Vice President Dan Quayle.

The 56-year-old man reportedly placed two calls to Los Angeles Police Department operators from a pay telephone located at 200 World Way at the airport. Police said that he threatened to “fulfill his plans” to kill the President and vice president if Secret Service agents did not pick him up.

Police were dispatched to the airport after the man provided his name and the telephone number of the pay phone he was using. He was arrested near the Pan American Airlines check-in counter shortly after 1 a.m. and transported to the Pacific Division, where he was placed in the custody of the Secret Service, according to Pacific Division Sgt. Diljeet Singh.

‘Let Cat Out of Bag’

“He kind of let the cat out of the bag,” Singh said. “When we approached him he said, ‘I didn’t do anything to the President. Why do you want to talk to me?’ Apparently, he wasn’t all together as far as his mental state was concerned. He was kind of incoherent at times.”

Police said the man, wearing blue jeans and a blue shirt and carrying no luggage, appeared to be drunk. Police Sgt. Russ Kirby said the man had arrived on a flight from Honolulu and was carrying a ticket for a 7 a.m. flight to Las Vegas.
