Olympic champion Ken Monday, of Stillwater, Okla., defeated Arsen Fadzaev of the Soviet Union to win the gold medal in the 74-kilo (163-pound) category at the World Freestyle Wrestling Championships at Martigny, Switzerland.
Monday, 27, scored a 6-1 victory over Fadzaev, who moved up a weight category this season after winning world and Olympic titles at 68 kilos (149.5 pounds) in 1987 and ’88.
In the 130-kilo (286-pound) title match, unheralded Ali Reza Soleimani of Iran upset Olympic silver medalist Bruce Baumgartner of the United States, 5-4.
