Lincoln Intercepts Five, Wins in Washington, D.C.

Lincoln High intercepted five Cardozo High passes and ran one back for a touchdown in a season-opening 40-8 victory Saturday afternoon in Washington D.C.

Outside linebacker Thomas Baker, who also kicked four extra points, ended the Lincoln scoring with a 23-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Fullback Charles Brown rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns, one on a 75-yard run in the fourth quarter, and Terrell Davis rushed for 81 yards in just nine carries.

Lincoln, which trailed, 8-6, at the half, scored 14 points in the third quarter and 20 more in the fourth.

Ramona held St. Anthony’s to three net yards late Friday night on the way to a season-opening 46-0 victory in Hawaii.

St. Anthony’s rushed for minus six yards and passed for nine. Ramona intercepted three passes.

On offense, Frank Thomas rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries, Sarn Salmon rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown on nine carries and Tom Smith rushed for 61 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries.

VOLLEYBALL

The U.S. women’s team made it three out of four, sweeping Canada, 15-11, 15-8, 15-10, at Grossmont College. Keva Phipps led the United States with 16 kills, and Angela Rock had 12 in the final match between the teams.

Ninth-ranked Washington defeated San Diego State, 15-10, 15-12, 10-15, 10-15, 15-5, to take third place in the ASICS Grand Prix women’s tournament at SDSU.

Shannon Mathew had 18 kills and Amy Irvin 16 for the Aztecs (2-2). Mathew and Irvin were named to the all-tournament team.

Colorado won the tournament by beating UC Santa Barbara, 15-8, 15-7, 15-9. USIU defeated Western Kentucky, 15-3, 15-7, 15-7, for fifth. Stephanie Milbradt had 11 kills for USIU (1-2).

Portland State defeated UC San Diego, 9-15, 15-10, 15-12 in the third-place game at the Fresno Pacific Invitational. Earlier, Chapman beat UCSD, 15-11, 15-4, but came back to beat Fresno Pacific 15-6, 14-16, 17-15.

UCSD (5-2) was led by Diana Klintworth, who had 34 kills in the three matches and was named to the all-tournament team.

The University of San Diego lost matches to Idaho, 15-5, 15-12, 15-7, and Utah State, 15-7, 13-15, 15-4, 15-6, and finished last in its five-team round robin invitational. Utah State, Idaho and Mississippi each finished with 3-1 records.

SOCCER

The Point Loma Nazarene soccer team won its opener by defeating Pacific Christian College, 5-1, in a nonconference match. Peter Stahl scored two of Point Loma’s goals. Jim Novak, Carlos Menezes and Dennis Vargas had one each.
